Lineart of sorts

I just got back from Hong Kong around a week ago, and for some reason as soon as I've gotten back, my body decided to allow all the fatigue of the entire month catch up to me all at once, and I've been doing little aside from sleep since.

I can blame it on jet lag, or my period, or the weather, but I think I just have a lame body.

Anyway.

I'm doing a sort of trade of skills with tokyoghoststory, so here's my first part. A lineart for now, and one of the first traditionally inked anything I've done in a really long time. I was testing out a few really swell brush pens that I got in Hong Kong. They're great! I love them!

I will post the coloured version later!

I drew some chibis to make into stickers for a few conventions I attended a couple of weeks back. I don't usually like to draw chibis, but they're pretty easy to draw, overall. I did them mostly for shows I've watched, since... I didn't want to do them for shows I don't watch, I suppose?

I had a pretty crap day, so I drew some Star Trek fanart to cheer myself up.

The first is a fanart for this story.

I don't usually like mpreg, but I must have somehow missed all the warnings on every single chapter! I'm glad I did though, because the story was cute, and there was one scene where Spock was eating decorative flowers, and the image was too cute to pass up.

Seriously. Favorite part. I kept hoping he'd do it again for the rest of the fic.

Anyway, it didn't really happen like it does in my pic but. :I I'm just bad at interpreting passages...

And McCoy, because he's my favorite.

I know stethoscopes would be completely dated in the distant future, but I can't seem to think "doctor" and not see one of those. And a lab coat. So, I ended up drawing McCoy with a lab coat and a stethoscope, even though he never wears a lab coat and never uses a stethoscope. Psh, younguns.

That's about it. I'm glad my shit day is almost over!

Drawing some more Two Keys

Was working on Two Keys again. I tend to do things like hunker down and draw 6 or 7 pages, and then stop drawing it for 3 or 4 months, forget how to draw the characters, and come back, relearn how to draw the characters, and draw 6 or 7 pages. I should probably not go over a week without drawing them, since I'm bound to forget. :/

Anyway, the story still isn't very exciting yet. They just sit around and talk a lot, but that's what they'll be doing for most of the story, so I guess this is as exciting as it'll get. I'm finished chapter 1, and the next chapter will have sniper rifles and motorcycles (maybe), so maybe it'll be more exciting after all.

Some random panelssss

Colin plays some cards. panda_ne tells me that I tend to draw card games in my stories a lot, and I guess it's because I tend to play cards when I have nothing to do. The game they're gonna play is Deuce, because if you know where to look, Exodus is secretly Hong Kong. And... I guess no one will know how to play Deuce, but that's okay, since it's not really the point of the sequence.

There is a talking cat. He is also playing cards. Pft who needs dogs and Poker, when you have cats and Deuce. He has opposable thumbs, too!

Moving on.

One of the gamblers. He looks an awful lot like Jay, but with a different personality, or else I'll end up making his life miserable too.
He was originally supposed to just show up once, but I actually really like his design, so I may turn him into a recurring character, provided that there's an opportunity for him to recur.

Pre-apologies for suckage since it usually takes a while for me to get the hang of drawing anything.

The Star Trek power trio. On shore leave or something, I guess. They're supposed to be eating roasted chestnuts, since that's what I associate with winter. There's no evidence that suggests that McCoy smokes, but he seems to be the type who indulges in vices.

Anyway, earlier I told heart_mint that Spock is Kirk's logic and McCoy is his conscience, and she said, "Doesn't that make Kirk id?"

...it does, doesn't it? That's actually a little unsettling, I think.

In any case, I've announced this about 15 times, but I guess I'll just do so again.

I'll be at the Mariott-Pinnacle Hotel this weekend for VCON!!

I drew a submission for the magazine Crossed Genres, the current theme being LGBTQ. I thought that in itself was a little vague, but I gave it my best, I guess mostly because I've wanted to draw a picture in this pose for a while now.

Originally, the kneeling knight was kissing his hand (which I liked better), but nenadi told me that it wasn't all that homoerotic, so I changed it a little. This is better? I hope?

A short while back, panda_ne asked me to draw her Spock. And since I wasn't opposed to the idea, I agreed. I've never really watched Star Trek, and the extent of my exposure to the universe can basically be summed up with: "I went to watch the movie, and it was, like, pew pew! And I liked it! What's pon farr?"

So I had a vague idea of who the characters are, and I knew enough to know that I liked the characters, and I never really got any farther than that for the same reason I didn't want to start watching Doctor Who: it was intimidating. In any case, since I already agreed, I decided that I needed to read a fanfic or something to get into the groove, as it were. And since I tend to follow seperis' fics, I read this, which I'm sure everyone's read. And then promptly looked for a star trek reboot community.

And then. AND THEN. tokyoghoststory sent me this. And this.

AND NOW WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!?

*shakes fist at tokyoghoststory* KKHAAAAAAAANN!!!

TL;DR, I now ship Kirk/Spock and Kirk/Bones.

A few promo post cards

A few promo post cards for Two Keys I whipped up while watching Desperaux. Did anyone else see that movie? It wasn't as good or as epic as I hoped it would be, and I thought it took itself a bit too seriously for a story about a kingdom that banned soup.

Since I'll be attending Vcon soon, I thought I'd get together some post cards to hand out. I ended up doing two because of the following reasons:

1. If I draw Colin and Audrey together, it seems to imply that they're a couple.
2. I could just draw Colin, but who wants to look at an ugly old dude?
3. I could just draw Audrey, but I always do that.

So in the end I gave them each their own card.

Two Keys itself was supposed to follow a deco-ish type theme. That didn't come across at all, I thought, so I did the post cards in hopes of capturing a little of the deco spirit.

Anyway, I'll prolly get these printed to hand out at VCON, so if you're in the area, please come say hi!

A CG of a clown I did, potentially for a client?
I'm not too sure what's going on with that, actually, since they haven't gotten back to me yet. I hope it's okay to put the picture up though.

I was asked for a sinister, killer-clown type character, and I decided that as opposed to going the dark, gritty, grimy route, I'd try something different? I thought the pastel colours lend itself to a type of more subtle note of sinister...ness. I hope it didn't kill the creepy though. Any opinions?

ETA: Apparently this isn't gritty enough, so there goes this aesthetic. :C I'm not too happy about it since I thought it was a bit more unique as far as creepy carnivals go, but such is life.

Still stoked for season 2

Still stoked for Season 2 of Merlin, as nenadi and hiphopelephant will testify, since I spent more time than either would prefer telling them exactly how stoked I was. Neither of them really give a crap either, but I don't know anyone else who likes the show.

Anyway, since I was stoked, and I was upset about not being able to learn how to use Painter adequately (I think that the learning curve is not so much a learning curve as a learning wall. The concrete types with barbed wire at the top and strobe lights to keep you from getting over it.), I was fiddling around with photoshop and trying out a technique I saw somewhere online with some Merlin fanart.

Which didn't work at all, and it was generally an upsetting experience, so I don't think I'll be experimenting with that again anytime soon.

But, the fanart anyway. I actually hate it a lot, and I'd rather not look at it if I don't have to. Part of me is wondering if I should post it at all. I'm not happy with it, but I don't think I can stand working on it any longer. (Not to mention I lost my saved file. :/)

By now I think I should just copypasta my shpeel about how much I suck at capturing likeness of people and how they look nothing like them.

On the bright side, I seem to be fantastically adept at drawing blood! Must be left-over from all those teenaged emo pics I used to draw.

Just looking at the pic is making me grumpy, so I guess I should move on.

And another pic, because I actually like Gwen/Merlin. I think they're really cute. I like Arthur/Morgana too, and Merlin/Morgana, just for the heck of it.

I don't really like Gwen/Arthur yet, but I hope I do. I hope they start bickering or something, because I know that'll get me to like them.

I felt the need to draw Prince Ivan in his royal garb, even though it's really of the wrong era. I haven't really decided what colour Ivan's clothes are yet though, but blue seems to contrast nicely with his hair. Red and green still looks a bit too much like Christmas to me.

I love drawing Ivan's hair. Every time I draw it, it looks a little bit more whimsical. By now it looks like it belongs to Vishnu or something, it's so crazy, it curls into itself.

Anyway, it looks like I'll be attending these conventions in Oct:

APE - San Fran, Oct 17-18

It's been so long since I've drawn anything that isn't directly related to the few comics I'm working on that I just wanted to draw something for the hell of it.

And for some reason or another, I started to read Merlin fanfics again (probably stoked for season 2), so I thought I may as well! As I've previously mentioned, I'm really bad at capturing the likeness of people, so if you have any pointers for me, please let me know.

Not the most original idea in the box, but it was fun to draw, at least...

Maybe it was just because I was looking at Star Trek fan art, but for some reason when I was drawing him I kept thinking that I was drawing Spock. Merlin really needs to do something with that hair of his. :/

edit: *scratches head* I thought I read somewhere on the merlin/arthur comm that it's okay if one of them is in the post, but apparently I remembered wrong. Sorry, guys.

My sister sent me 40 or so chapters of Kekkaishi and demanded that I read them all. So I did.

...And then I drew fanart. I couldn't help it! Yoshimori got all badass-like, and I'm a complete sucker for things like that! Not to mention Yoshimori is the type of main character I like.

I really like him. I honestly like a lot of the characters, including pretty much everone in Yoshimori's harem. Yes, Masamori's in there too, don't deny it.

More Dragon Eye Fanart

Finished reading Dragon Eye up to around volume 9 the other day. I heard that it's on hiatus, which sucks becuase for some reason vol 10 hasn't been released yet, so the story is hanging right in the middle of a battle and before a climatic event.

In any case, my favorite character is still Sakuraba, for some reason. I even remember his birthday, sinice it's on Pi Day. And he wasn't in the tournament, but he still got plenty 'o airtime, so I was happy.

...It's kind of hard to tell, but Issa's playing his PSP.

I always really love the BFF thing they have going, even though Sakuraba looks old enough to be Issa's dad. I think he mentioned at one point that they're the same age, though.

Which makes me think that the whole Issa/Leila thing seems a little bit creepy. As far as I can tell, Issa is at least 25 years old. Leila is... 14. While he seems to treat her more as a little sister than anything, she seems to have a crush on him. Then again, she also has a crush on Aoi.

A picture I drew, because I realized I actually had no coloured pictures for Two Keys. So I drew this so that I'd have at least one thing to make banners and so on out of.

I asked Schumie to say something cool, and she said that, so I wrote it on the poster.

So the characters on it are Colin, and the other dude is Lucas, although I'm wondering why he's there cause he won't show up for a while yet.

I'm pretty depressed right now and finding it hard to focus on anything, so Nuu out.

Dragon Eye fanart + sketch

I'm enjoying Dragon Eye waaaayyy too much. heart_mint couldn't find scans of volumes 7-9 online, so we ended up purchasing it on Yesasia.

Personally, I blame the library. If I hadn't found that first volume, I wouldn't have given another 40 bucks to yesasia. And now that we have volumes 7, 8 and 9, this means that eventually we'll have to get the first 6 volumes too, because that's the way it works. (I'm still trying to complete my Banana Fish set...)

Anyway, Dragon Eye was just fun and exciting to read, and my favorite character is... surprise!! Sakuraba!

He... overall I thought he's pretty similar to Iruka, but maybe not as nice and idealistic. Which is funny, because I never really liked Iruka that much.
I think the thing that makes him different though, is that he is obviously very strong, although he hasn't gotten his chance in the spotlight yet. Also, his relationship with the protagonist (Issa) makes him stand out a little more. And he's just cute.

Anyway, then I drew Ivan a little. Just for kicks.

Sometimes, I think it totally blows that I'm just a complete fan at heart. Nothing propels me like liking something. Enjoying a new series cheers me up completely like nothing else really does, and when I don't have a fandom to obsess over, I get pretty bored and down.

Is anyone else like that?

I was reading Black Jack again yesterday. Since the last time I read it, I was 6 or 7, I barely remember anything about him except that he's a doctor and he had black and white hair. I also remember a few vague things, like Pinoko and how he got the different coloured face, but overall my impression of him was pretty blurry.

So when I read it again, I definately didn't remember him being such a woobie. Good god, he's a woobie!

Anyway, it was pretty good, as usual, as all of Tezuka's stuff is. I was looking for fanart on Pixiv, and I kept seeing a character named Dr. K, who hasn't shown up yet, and for some reason I remember nothing about him. Well, waiting for him to show up...

Who charges such arbritrary amounts anyway?

I also started to read Dragon Eye, because I found the first volume in the library. I didn't expect it to be very good, because... honestly, it's mostly because the cover isn't very attractive. But I'm glad I read it, because it was actually very enjoyable. The art's nice (it's better on the inside, honestly), the story's decent, the action's good, and I like the main character. Overall it was fun to read.

...Downloading the next 6 volumes now.

Some paintings

I was practicing painting a little bit recently, because I realized how long it's been since I last painted. I thought, perhaps, that the reason the colours in my painting always comes out so grey and muddy might have to do with the fact that I paint everything with 3 colours, and sometimes it's a little hard to mix the right skin tone. Maybe it's an excuse, but blue always seems to get into everything no matter how hard I try to avoid it.

Anyway, so a little bit of painting practice. Also, the painting I finished previously for the Vancouver Art Box Show, which, of course it didn't get sold, so now it's lying around at home.

I found out that I paint better with my fingers than I do with brushes. The result was that I got oil paint everywhere. Couch, floor, face... everywhere.

Also: Am I the only one who is less than fond of the art direction of Devil Survivor? I hear it's a good game nonetheless, so I'll probably buy it. Also... I buy everything megaten, regardless of whether I actually like it or not...

Persona 4 Postcard Dump

Drawing up some new stuff for Anime Evolution so I have something new to sell....

I don't think I'll have any new posters this year. Maybe I'll still have time to draw one more.
Anyway, instead, I have a bunch of P4 post cards.

Behold! P4 cast, hipster styled! So. Hipster. These are the dudes who are swinging at the clubs and taking all the good clothes at the vintage stores, all while holding a digital camera and taking photos of every other second and texting their friends with the other hand.

In any case, I think these function better as a set than individually, so I'll probably be selling them as a set for cheaper. No doubt I will have plenty left over after the con, so keep an eye out for me selling these for cheap online. :I

I am currently waiting for TF2 to finish updating so I can force nenadi to play with me.

The kicker with that was that last night, I was trying to design some new characters, and for some reason one of the characters looked like Heavy, so I was looking into that. I quickly got sucked into the vortex that I had previously tried to avoid, if only because I'm abysmal at all FPS games. One time I was playing Halo, and my friend's boyfriend said "Wow. I didn't know it could be that difficult to walk up the stairs."

But... well, I'll try anyway. :I

So, a cover, for the new webcomic, which is to be named "Two Keys". Not ripping off Alice's Two Rooks, I swear! I was gonna name it "Five Keys", but then realize that there actually aren't five keys, only two, so... yeah. :I

The files will be a little larger this time. I'm making this with the finish size at 6" X 9", which means the type is a little bit smaller, which means I had to make the image a bit bigger.

Also, the huuuge pic that I did for my grad show booth. I now have the printed version on foamcore (dents and all) mounted on a wall in my room. heart_mint, who came in and had to help me put it up said "this is so narcassistic."

OH YEAH, heart_mint? WELL, SO'S YOUR FACE.

I haven't exactly been too productive as of late, so I have nothing to post, really. I am posting this because nenadi said if I don't, then she'll think I'm dead and give me a funeral, and as I am not emo I do not want a funeral.
So, there is progress on my Chie cosplay!

ETA: It occured afterward that I should mention that I didn't actually make this costume. I got the jacket somewhere, and I commissioned miko_piko to make the skirt for me. Thanks, miko_piko! Now you just have to show us your protag uniform. >:<

I'm graduating in exactly... 5 days, and it's all very exciting. I just got the printed boards for my grad show booth, and it sure costed a lot to get them done, but it looks really good!

The boards themselves are pretty large. They're printed on foamcore, so I can avoid the messy task of having to mount them. I can't even begin to imagine how must of a disasterous that would've turned out; mounting is not my forte.

Those three were the long ones, and I have one more...

A giant illustration I did specifically for the grad-show. I'm realtively happy with how it turned out. I didn't want to take the bubble wrap off (one of the corners is already busted), but it seemed pretty good quality too.

Earlier today, I brought a few prints to a coffee shop for it to get hanged up. Framed them yesterday.

It'd be nice if a few sell, but not really expecting it. It's nice exposure though, the place seems pretty busy!

Last Sunday I went to the Emerald City Comic Con, mostly just to buy things and whore my portfolio around. Diana of Ronin Studios was there too, and she was lovely enough to look through my portfolio and give me some great advice, so I'll be fixing my folio up.

Also saw one of the people I was super stoked on seeing: Ben Templesmith. I love the guy.
I even refused to lend my friend my copy of Fell because I needed to get him to sign it. In any case, here's a candid shot we got of him:

He was super nice, and very charismatic. I have a gigantic crush on him.
He reminded me a little of Simon Pegg.

I was completely unabashedly creepy and asked Mr. Templesmith to autograph my arm, which he did, surprisingly. My friends were there, and there was a diagram in the handbook should a similiar situation arise, but we figured that it was okay since I didn't ask him to tattoo my chest.

I should probably wash that off at some point. Before my grad show, probably.
